An Abscessed Tooth is a painful infection at the base or root of the tooth or between the gum and tooth. It is a complication of tooth decay.

It is also a collection of infected materials (pus) coming from bacterial infection in the center of the tooth.

Causes of an Abscessed Tooth

- Untreated cavities.

- Tooth decay.

- Trauma to the tooth - broken or chipped.

- Opening in the tooth enamel.

Symptoms

- Toothache - Severe shooting pain.

- Pain when chewing.

- Sensitivity to hot and cold.

- Bitter taste in the mouth.

- Possible fever.

Treatment for an Abscessed Tooth

- Elimination of the infection.

- Antibiotics.

- Surgical drainage.

- Root canal and crown

- Extraction of the infected tooth may be necessary.

Prevention

- Brush your teeth twice a day.

- Use fluoridated water.

- Fluoride in toothpaste.

- Visit your Dentist twice a year for cleaning and check-ups.
