Understand Insurance terms

Dental Insurance is designed to pay for Dental Cost. The Insurance pays a portion of the bill from Dentists, Hospitals and other Dental Providers.

Normally, it is 50% of the cost after you have met your deductible. The other 50% is out-of-pocket patient's money.

Most of the Dental Insurance Policies have a cap of $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 per year to spend on Dental Procedures. After that amount is used, you will have to pay all the bills yourself.

Types of Insurance

PPO - Preferred Provider Organization

Dentists who participate in this plan have negotiated their fees with the PPO and provide their services according to the agreement.

Usually, this does not cover all the fees. The patient will have to meet his deductible and a co-payment at the time of service.

Individuals select their Dentist from a network of providers who belong to the PPO.

DHMO - Dental Health Maintenance Organization

DHMO normally is the least expensive. Patients select their Dentists from a network of providers who belong to the DHMO.

Dentists may have to perform services at below cost rates. Because Dentists have an agreement with the DHMO to provide specific treatments and services to patients at no-charge or with a low co-payment, DHMO rewards participating Dentists who keep patients in good health.

Dentists are paid by the Insurance Company for each patient regardless of how much or how often covered services are used.

Indemnity

The customer chooses their own Dentist.

No Network in this plan.

The insurance company has a Pre-Set Fee for Services. If the amount paid by the Insurance is less than the Dentist fees, the patient pays the difference.

This kind of Dental Insurance is more expensive.

Scheduled Plans

You pay the Dentist directly and the Insurance Company reimburse you. They have a calendar year maximum or deductible.

There is a waiting period for certain treatments.

You will receive from the Dental Insurance Company a chart showing every covered procedure and the amount you will be reimbursed for.

Example: If cleaning is covered for $45.00 and the Dentist fees is $50.00, you will have to pay the dentist $50.00 and the Insurance will reimburse you $45.00

Cafeteria

The term Cafeteria means that you can choose from different options within your Insurance Policy.

Dental-Care-and-Insurance Studies shows that a single adult person will spend about $12.50 per week for Dental Insurance premiums.

Many unfortunate people cannot afford these kind of premiums, and it is why they do not a have any coverage.
