What is Dental Public Health?

Dental Public Health is a non-clinical specialty. They are concerned with improving Dental Health of the population instead of individuals.

Working with Health Authorities and Government Offices, they are doing assessment of Dental Health needs and make sure that those Dental Services have met those needs.

This Specialty plays a role in Dental Education of the public, with applied Dental Research and with the administration of groups of Dental Care Programs.

They work at prevention and control of Dental Diseases on a community basis. Dental Public Health also put in place, with the help of the community authorities, programs to help the less fortunate who greatly need the service.

The United States Surgeon General has reported that 80% of oral disease is found in 25% of the population. This 25% is found in under served, and at below poverty level. Dental caries is the most common infectious and chronic disease in children. 22% of 6 - 11 years old have untreated primary tooth decay.

The reasons why getting Dental Care is not always accessible

- Lack of insurance

- Cultural issues

- Lack of awareness of how to prevent Dental Disease

- Misdistributions of resources

- And public indifference are some of the reasons

The goal of Dental Public Health is to design programs which will reduce these tragic percentages.

Protection and improvement of Oral Health for the whole community can only be accomplished through the incorporation of Public Health Programs which involves many resources.
