Report of poor Oral Health in our children
In 2002, "Oral Health in America: A report from the Surgeon General"
found that dental caries (tooth decay or cavities) is the most chronic
childhood ailment. It is 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times
more common than hay fever.
In 2005, The Center of Disease Control and Prevention found that
tooth decay is the most chronic disease among children aged 5 to 17.
Oral Health Problems affecting infants are also very serious.
What our children eat affects their teeth!
Sugar and starches can cause tooth decay because it is more
difficult to clean babies and childrens teeth. You can see debris
of food remaining in childrens teeth resulting in bacteria growth
and ultimately tooth decay.
Oral and Dental Care necessities for children and infants
Baby teeth cleaning - Baby teeth should be cleaned as soon as they come in.
Clean baby teeth with soft wash cloth after every bottle or meal.
When more than one tooth is present, use a small tooth brush and
warm water.
Childrens teeth should be brushed after giving medicine. Acids
contained in medicine may eat away at tooth enamel which is the
natural protective coating of the teeth.
Fluoride treatment should be monitored by the Pediatric Dentist.
Dental flossing is recommended and parents need to start flossing
when two teeth emerge next to each other. At 6 years of age, children should be able to floss themselves. Mouth washing is only recommended by the age of 7.
Remember to change your childrens toothbrushes every 3 months.
As you can see, Pediatric Dentist starts Dental Care at a very early age.
